July 18, 2002 KAC-DC & AAAJ Media Seminar Synopsis
The DC chapters of the Korean American Coalition and the Asian American Journalists Association co-sponsored a media seminar led by area journalism professionals on July 18 at the downtown World Bank offices.

A panel of journalists included: Mil Arcega, an NBC4 anchor and reporter; Mei-Ling Hopgood, a Washington correspondent for Cox newspapers; Robert Long, VP of News and Operations for NBC4; Sarah Lee, a correspondent for NBC News and MSNBC; and John O' Sullivan, the editor-in-chief of United Press International. They spoke of breaking into the business and attaining "the story," and discussed journalism ethics and insider experiences of broadcast and print journalism.

They also acknowledged the lack of Asian American journalists on television and the need for visibility in the journalism arena, including newsrooms and stations. Mil Arcega, one of a handful of Asian American men in broadcast journalism, recalled being discouraged by school counselors and friends from pursuing television, since it was atypical for an Asian male to pursue such a profession.

The panelists encouraged aspiring journalists and college audience members to market themselves and defy stereotypes of subservience, passiveness, and an inability to fight for stories.

Feb, 25, 2002 Speaker Series Event
Before a packed audience on Capitol Hill, KAC-DC's recent Speaker Series event featured John C. Yoo, Deputy Assistant Attorney General at the U.S. Department of Justice and one of the highest ranking Korean Americans in the Bush Administration.

A constitutional law professor at UC Berkeley who gained notoriety during the Bush-Gore presidential recount battle for his frequent appearances on national TV news shows, Yoo provided an insider's perspective on the inner workings of the Administration and its current agenda. He also offered humorous anecdotes about his diverse career experiences as
a reporter for the Wall Street Journal and clerk for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.

The Philadelphia native spoke passionately about the importance of public service and giving back to one's community and country. He credited Harold Koh, his former professor at Yale Law School who served in a high-ranking human rights post during the Clinton Administration, for persuading him to eventually teach law.
